Often if we’re heading to the theatre, whether it’s for a matinee or an evening performance, we incorporate a meal into the experience. While some people prefer to dine before they head to the theatre, others prefer to indulge with snacks and have a meal afterwards. We think the former is the best option – here’s why.
1. Avoids hunger and distraction
Eating beforehand ensures you won’t be distracted by hunger pangs throughout the performance. It’s hard to concentrate on the action if your stomach is rumbling – and it’s hard for others to enjoy the show if you’re rustling packets of crisps and sweets every few minutes. Eating a meal before the curtain rises means you can become fully immersed in the performance from the moment it begins until the cast members have taken their bow.
2. Time management
By pre-booking dinner, theatre shows are easier to manage your time around. You can work out how far your restaurant is from the show and ensure your table is reserved early enough that you can have a leisurely meal as well as ample time to spare before the performance. This means the whole experience is more relaxed, and there’s no need to rush around after the show looking for a place that is open and serving food. Many evening theatre shows don’t finish until around 10pm, meaning your options may be limited post-show.
3. Taking advantage of deals
Theatre and meal deals are available almost everywhere you go in theatreland. Restaurants have understood theatregoers’ need for fast service, good food and affordability, so you will often find great value deals that ensure you get all three. By eating before the show, you can take advantage of deals that are not always available for post-show dining.
4. Social experience
Dining before a show allows you to enjoy some social connection with friends or family before settling into your seats. It provides an opportunity to catch up before you step into a magical world that will whisk you away.
What to eat before the show
What you eat pre-show is ultimately up to you, but we have a few tips if you want to enjoy the best possible experience:
1. Don’t load up on carbs, particularly for a matinee as lots of carbohydrate can make you sleepy, and you don’t want to be battling drowsiness during the performance.
2. Include protein. Whether you want something light like grilled sea bass or something hearty like braised beef cheek, ensuring protein is part of your meal will keep you feeling full and provide sustained energy.
3. Finish with something refreshing and light if you’re having a dessert. This will stop you feeling heavy and bloated during the show.
