Quiz nights are a staple of British social life, bringing together friends, family and colleagues for an evening of general knowledge and friendly competition. Whether you’re taking part at the local pub or one of Wembley Park’s restaurants, a quiz is sure to spark debate and laughter in equal measure, and confer status upon the victors – even if there’s no actual prize.
Those who frequent quiz nights will be familiar with the categories that regularly come up: general knowledge, history, geography, science, literature, sport and music are all common themes for rounds. But what are the types of questions that tend to come up time and again? Here, we summarise what you should brush up on next time you’re taking part in a battle of knowledge.
1. Rivers
Lots of people know their capital cities well, but questions about the rivers of different countries – or even those in the UK – are often more challenging, which is why they commonly come up in quizzes. Learning a few facts about the world’s rivers will stand you in good stead for your next quiz night.
2. Dates
History is full of meaningful events that took place in particular years: the Battle of Trafalgar, the start of the First World War, the year Henry VIII became king. Knowing a selection of historic years is vital for any quiz, as it’s a common theme that comes up.
3. Award winners
Whether it’s the team that won the FA Cup in 2012 or last year’s Oscar winner for Best Actress, awards often come up in some form or another at quizzes. With that in mind, it’s worth knowing the latest Booker Prize winner or the names of at least three Nobel Prize winners.
4. Olympics
Sport rounds often have a question about the Olympics, so it pays to have a few handy facts up your sleeve about this international competition. You might get asked where it was hosted in a particular year or how many gold medals Britain won in the last Games, for example.
5. James Bond
As one of the most famous British franchises, James Bond is a favourite theme for quiz questions. Knowing your Goldfinger from your Goldeneye is bound to help you score some all-important points.
6. Human biology
Human biology questions frequently crop up in science rounds, and can often catch you out. Knowing how many bones are in the adult human body, what DNA stands for, and the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration are a great start.
7. Great Britain
Great Britain is a topic that invariably makes its way into a slew of quiz categories, from history and geography to politics, music and art. Get to know your prime ministers, your London landmarks and your British architects for those catch-out general knowledge questions.
8. Football
Like the Olympics, sports rounds are not complete without a question about football. Knowledge of World Cup finalists, host nations and England players is sure to benefit your team on quiz night.
