Taking young children to a restaurant can feel daunting, especially if the venue you’ve chosen isn’t specifically geared up for families. However, it can be a positive experience for everyone if you bear in mind a few simple tips. So instead of shying away from that pre-theatre dinner or restaurant lunch with the family, here are some ways to keep it fun and stress-free.
1. Take some entertainment
Whether you’re having a day out sightseeing, are about to catch a family theatre show or are at a theme park, your children will probably require some entertainment while they wait for their meal. Little minds get bored easily, so a book, a small toy or some colouring will help them get some downtime without running riot.
2. Look at the menu together
Lots of young children like to be given a choice, so instead of simply deciding for them, read out the options so they can pick what they want to eat. If the kids’ menu doesn’t offer anything that strikes their fancy, you can share your adult meal with them. Most restaurants are happy to bring an extra plate and you can always order an additional side to bulk out the meal.
3. Don’t expect them to be perfect
It’s helpful for parents to accept before they go out that their children may not be perfectly behaved throughout the meal. They aren’t going to stop being children just because you’re out and about, so they may get up from their seat a few times, or raise their voice a little too much if they get excited. Don’t scold them for playing a little with their food if it’s keeping them engaged with their meal and they’re eating. Of course, throwing food and disrupting other diners isn’t appropriate.
4. Portion control
Kids’ portions can often be too large for younger children, and may cause them to get a little overwhelmed by the amount of food on their plate. It can help to set some of their food aside or encourage them to only eat what they can manage. Try to promote healthy eating by getting them to eat a little bit of everything on the plate – veggies included.
5. Head to the restaurant early
If you’ve booked a matinee performance of a theatre show, you’ll know what time you have to be seated for the performance. This makes pre-theatre dining with kids easier, as you can ensure you have plenty of time to fill up their tummies. Booking an early slot means that the restaurant will be a little quieter and you won’t have to rush to the venue if the kids take longer to eat than you expected. You’ll then have time to get them comfy and settled before the performance.
