Different Flavours of Gelato and Their Popularity

November 28, 2024

When it comes to gelato – the Italian word for ice cream – everyone has their own preferences. While some people like their ice cream plain with no extras, others want sauce, sprinkles, flakes, chocolate chips and wafers. The good news is that our Gelato comes from Hackney Gelato, who have 66 Great Taste Stars! Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular gelato flavours.

Madagascan Vanilla

Various surveys over the past few years have shown that vanilla remains the nation’s favourite flavour.  Creamy and smooth with a subtle sweetness, vanilla goes nicely with almost any topping or dessert, from rich chocolate fudge brownies to sticky toffee puddings. It can also be paired with more exotic flavours such as mango or passion fruit due to its subtleness.  Because vanilla is such a popular flavour, vegans can often find an option that suits their dietary needs. The best places to eat in Wembley Park will have vegan gelato on the menu to cater to those who prefer plant-based dining.

Rich Chocolate Sorbetto

Just as vanilla consistently hits the top spot, chocolate typically comes in second when the UK’s dessert lovers are surveyed. This is because it pretty much works as a dessert on its own. Rich, indulgent and sweet, it tends to satisfy even the fussiest of chocoholics. Chocolate ice cream can be served plain or it can contain fancy extras such as chocolate pieces or swirls of fudge. When enjoying a special occasion such as theatre with dinner, chocolate ice cream might be the perfect rich finale to a delicious meal. Chocolate and vanilla ice cream also work well together if you fancy more than one ice cream flavour in a bowl.

Strawberry

While the top two gelato flavours are held by vanilla and chocolate, the competition is fiercer once we get to third place and beyond. Strawberry is one of the contenders for this spot thanks to its light, fruity and refreshing taste. Perfect for a summer day, it can be made with fresh strawberries and paired with desserts such as Eton Mess or strawberry cheesecake. It’s also delicious on a cone when you’re at the beach or enjoying one of London’s parks.

Mint Chocolate Chip

Mint chocolate chip is another contender for third place, being named as the nation’s third favourite gelato flavour in a 2023 survey. The combination of refreshing mint with satisfyingly crunchy chocolate pieces makes it a taste sensation.

Sea Salted Caramel

Salted caramel is another favourite, offering the perfect balance of sweet and salty. It’s become increasingly popular in recent years and is regularly thought of as a more sophisticated ice cream. It also works well with indulgent desserts like chocolate fudge brownie.

Pistachio

Pistachio gelato combines a sweet, slightly buttery flavour with the crunch of pistachio nuts, making it one of the UK’s favourite flavours. Its characteristic green flavour also brings a splash of colour to desserts.
