For decades, Wembley has been synonymous with some of the greatest sporting events and live music performances to grace the UK. Its two iconic venues, Wembley Stadium and the OVO Arena, have played host to some of music’s biggest performers, from Adele and Take That to Muse and Oasis.
Wembley Stadium in particular has been home to a plethora of iconic performances and record-breaking runs. In 2024, Taylor Swift became the first solo artist to play at Wembley Stadium eight times during a single tour. The following year Coldplay performed ten nights at the venue, playing to an estimated 900,000 fans. But the district has long enjoyed a rich music scene beyond the sellout tours, and its local establishments have been influential in the experiences of many musicians.
The local music scene
Macari’s Musical Exchange, based on Ealing Road, was established in Wembley in the 1950s. A shop selling instruments, it was also something of a hub for musicians who would jam there together. Indeed, it was visited by some world-class musicians during the 1960s such as The Who drummer Keith Moon, who practiced here as a teenager, as well as Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend.
A couple of Tube stops from Macari’s stood the site of the UK’s first purpose-built soundstage. In the 1960s, the newly constructed Studio 5 became the home of major ITV productions, even hosting The Beatles in 1964. Over the years, more famous feet trod the floorboards, with Nina Simone, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and Mick Jagger all paying visits. In 1991, Freddie Mercury recorded his final music video here.
Today’s venues
Today, food and entertainment venues across Wembley keep the live music scene alive, supporting local artists and hosting intimate showcases in a more relaxed setting. Those hoping to discover upcoming talent or experience live music with a more personal feel frequent the district’s smaller establishments to hear artists such as ChloeJet, Ruby Murphy and Max Runham.
In 2019 the prestigious Studio 5 soundstage became the Studio Five restaurant, switching era-defining broadcasts featuring international legends for bold fusion dining enhanced by the sounds of local artists. Here, a monthly music night enables diners to experience soulful vocals and spirited performances as they enjoy a selection of creative, contemporary dishes.
