How food can affect your daily life

March 25, 2025

Food has a profound impact on our daily lives, influencing everything from our health and energy levels to our moods and ability to concentrate. Organisations such as the NHS and World Health Organisation have stated time and again that too much sugar, saturated fat or carbohydrate in our diet can impact our physical health, while fruits and vegetables will give a vital boost to our immune system, emotional wellbeing and more. Let’s take a look at how our food choices impact our daily life.

What does food do in our bodies?

Lots of foods such as lean meat, vegetables and grains are often described as ‘nutritious’. This means they contain lots of the components – such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants – that enable the cells in our bodies to perform their necessary functions. Eating plenty of foods that are rich in various nutrients promotes optimum cell function and can help to reduce the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and mood disorders.

Invisible benefits

Although many of us think of our diet in terms of weight gain or loss, eating nutritious food isn’t only about maintaining a consistent weight. There are lots of benefits to a balanced diet that you can’t see with your eyes, though you may feel them.

Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, as well as a portion of oily fish such as salmon or trout each week, helps our hearts to stay healthy. They enable the body to maintain blood pressure and cholesterol levels more easily, reducing the risk of cardiovascular issues.

Meanwhile, plenty of leafy greens and dairy help to keep our bones and teeth strong, which is particularly important as we age. Dietary fibre found in whole grains, nuts and seeds will aid digestion, keeping the gut healthy, and natural protein sources support muscle growth and repair.

Conversely, a diet high in processed foods and refined sugars, which are found in cakes, pastries and desserts, can leave you feeling fatigued, stiffen the walls of your blood vessels and affect your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

Getting a balance

While food has a significant impact on our daily life, there’s no need to make huge changes to your diet overnight. You can still go to your favourite Wembley places to eat once in a while and order the desserts and treats you love – just don’t make it a regular habit.

Research shows that the best way to improve your diet is slowly, by gradually cutting out the things that are bad for you and introducing healthier habits. Start by choosing a salad or veggies instead of chips as a side at your go-to Wembley Park restaurants, for example, or swap your mid-morning biscuits for a piece of fruit. You can then build on this foundation.
