Tips to help you prepare for a quiz night?

November 17, 2025

Quiz nights are a cornerstone of British culture. Gathering your friends, getting a round of drinks in and putting your knowledge to the test is not only a great way to spend an evening – it’s also a matter of pride for the individuals on the winning team. But what’s the best way to prepare for a quiz – be it at the local pub or one of your favourite Wembley Park restaurants? Here are our top tips for maximising your chances of being on the winning side.

1. Gather a diverse group

Within a group of friends there are usually specialists – either in music, sport, TV & film, or literature. When picking your team, try to cover as many bases as possible so that you have a good chance of being able to answer questions in every round.

2. Swat up

General knowledge is infinitely useful in a pub quiz, so some swatting beforehand will always set you up well. Whether you learn some names of rivers or cities, review details from key sporting events or simply start listening to a wider range of music, every little helps.

3. Read

Keeping abreast of the headlines is sure to help you with any current affairs questions, so make sure you’re reading the news daily in the weeks before the quiz. Swapping your usual psychological thriller novel for the odd non-fiction book can help too, making you smarter and better prepared to scoop the pub quiz title.

4. Work on your recall skills

It’s all very well taking in lots of information, but you need to be able to remember it in the heat of the moment. Create associations with some of the facts you learn, or share them with colleagues to help cement your knowledge. You can also write questions as you learn then test yourself afterwards.

5. Practise

Why wait for the night to arrive before putting your knowledge to the test? There are plenty of websites with pub quiz questions available for free. Hop online and go through a few to see how you get on. You never know – a question from your practise sessions could end up being asked at the event.

6. Don’t give up!

If, despite all your prep, your team comes last, remember that a pub quiz is a night for light-hearted competition and fun. Identify what your worst rounds were – maybe you need to brush up on your James Bond villains or your local knowledge, such as Wembley Park places to eat – and keep learning. You’re sure to improve over time, and the more you know, the more likely you are to win!
