Top 9 British dishes

April 2, 2025

British cuisine has a reputation for being hearty and filling, and there are some classic dishes that we all love to come back to every now and again. Here, we list nine favourites that always leave us feeling satisfied and content.

1. Fish and chips

Whether you’re eating them wrapped in newspaper by the sea or at one of the best restaurants for lunch in London, fish and chips are comforting and delicious. With crunchy batter and soft, flaky fish, golden chips and minted peas, this dish is a favourite whatever the occasion.

2. Curry

Although curry comes from the Indian subcontinent, many of the dishes we enjoy today have been adapted for the British palate. Chicken tikka masala is a firm favourite among meat eaters, while chickpea curries are a popular plant-based option. Served with fluffy basmati rice, this dish is packed with flavour for a satisfying meal.

3. Roast

Sunday roasts are a tradition in many British households, providing an opportunity for families to eat together. This feast combines tender chicken, beef or pork with roast potatoes, an array of vegetables and Yorkshire puddings, alongside lashings of gravy. It’s hearty fare at its best.

4. Steak

Few Brits would deny that there’s something special about tucking into a perfectly cooked steak. Juicy, well-seasoned and cooked to your preference, steak is a firm favourite in the best restaurants for dinner. And when served with peppercorn sauce and fries, it’s truly delicious.

5. Full English breakfast

The full English breakfast is all about setting you up for the day. Different eateries have different variations to suit a wide range of dietary requirements, but the classic plate includes sausage, bacon, egg, hash browns, tomatoes and baked beans. It’s the perfect start a British weekend.

6. Bangers and mash

This dish appears time and time again in top 10 lists of British food, and can be found on many a pub menu. ‘Bangers’ – chunky sausages – are paired with mashed potato and gravy, often with veggies on the side, to create a filling meal that’s quick to cook for weeknight dinners.

7. Shepherd’s pie

You may have noticed by now that meat and potatoes take centre stage in many British dishes. Shepherd’s pie is another example, which combines lean minced lamb with a creamy mash topping. Vegetarians and vegans can use meat alternatives or minced vegetables for an equally tasty option.

8. Crumble

Fruit crumble is one of the most popular desserts in Britain. Whether it’s made with apples, pears or summer berries, the sweet fruit and crunchy topping make for a taste sensation. A helping of custard or ice cream finishes it off perfectly.

9. Sundae

Ice cream sundaes are another favourite way to round off a meal. Layering ice cream with nuts, sauces and other elements such as fruit or pieces of chocolate brownie, they make for an indulgent and delightful dessert.
